About

This is my (Aditya’s) personal website.  I created this site initially in November 2006 as “stop the q-tip” for the purposes of hosting various projects that I work on as well as a blog.  However, by 2008 posts were few and far between.  In June 2008 I decided to rename the site to something a little less esoteric in the manner of some science blogs, which tend to take names derived from the bloggers’ fields of study, and came up with Heuristicism, as I study computer science, specifically the field of natural language processing  (the academic counterpart to this site can be found at my page at the Computing Science department at the University of Alberta).

I also resolved to do some more posting, but that really hasn’t happened.  The reason for this is that I just don’t feel justified posting about every little thing that happens or news item that comes up.  If I feel as though I have something original or worthwhile to say, I will say it, but I can’t be bothered with posting especially often.  I can also be a bit of a perfectionist, which means lengthier posts take longer for me to review (and hence present a more daunting task at the start).

I plan to use this space as a list for my non-academic projects, though most projects will be (and are) hosted at Google Code.  If I ever get around to doing some recording some more music, I will put it here as well.

I am a big open source fan, so all of my code projects are always released under an open source license (usually the GPL).  I have also decided to extend this philosophy to any posts I put up, and as such, all of my content on this site is licensed under a Creative Commons license.  I plan on maintaining this with any music I may do in the future as well – ideally, it will be released as “open source music” so I will (again, this is entirely speculative and based on whether or not I get around to doing it!) release the music in lossless format (FLAC) as well as a lossy format (MP3) as well as the sheet music or guitar tabs.

Oh, and I’m also an atheist.

My blog will cover numerous topics that are of interest to me, including atheism & religion, music, programming, technology, and anything else about which I happen to spend some time thinking.  If I get around to writing it and feel it is of sufficient quality (unlikely – whenever I’ve tried writing fiction, it feels too much like code), I may even put up some fiction.
